Important Changes to motorcycle testing from the Driving Standards Agency regarding
implementation of the
Third Licence
Directive. new rules and
regulations for motorcyclists wishing to take the
practical test to get a full licence.
Implementation of the new rules are due to come into force in January
2013 so we have just one year left under the current licensing
system.
The new licensing system
is as follows- Category

50cc 2,3or 4 wheel vehicles above 25km/h (15.5mph but not exceeding 45 km/h (28mph) Anyone passing an AM test will also be given a new domestic category Q licence to cover them for riding machines below 25km/h.
Up to 125cc/11kw(15bhp)power to weight ration not exceeding 0.1kW/kg (minimum 17 years old)
Motorcycles of a power not exceeding 35kW(47bhp) and with a power/weight ration not exceeding 0.2kW/kg and not derived from a vehicle more than double its power (Minimum 19 years old )
Any size motorcycle with or without sidecar (minimum 24 years old, unless upgrade from full A2 licence, with minimum 2 years experience)
As
you can see the minimum age for direct access has increased from 21 to 24 years and we
have lost the 125cc test with a 32bhp restriction for two years. The new A2 which will use the
current direct access Suzuki GS500 and the Category A will be
taken on a 600cc motorcycle | Minimum test Vehicle
2 wheeled vehicle not exceeding 50cc Speed no more than 45km/h(28MPH)
Motorcycle with a cubic capacity of at least 115cm3,capable of at least 90km/h (56mph)
Motorcycle without a sidecar, with a cylinder capacity of a least 395cm3 and an engine power of a least 25kW (35bhp). Therefore upper limit is capped by licence restriction at 35kW/47bhp.
Motorcycle with out a sidecar with a cylinder capacity of at least 595cm3, and an engine power of at lest 40kW (54 BHP)
